Web Development
Introduction & QTR Assignments (3)

Introduction

  1. This lecture will prepare you for completing your three web development assignments for the quarter.
  2. In the grand scheme of web development, these assignments are rather trivial. Since this is a survey course, and primarily a business seminar, I'm not going to focus heavily on the web development part. The class we are introducing in the spring of this year (2000) "Business Interface Design" will focus on that piece exclusively.
  3. I will provide you with the tools, and the web server space on a production server. That information will be in this section. The passcodes to access will be given out in class only (or by special request).
  4. I'll also attempt to instill good web development habits in you. This is relevant to subdirectory structures, naming conventions, etc.
  5. WARNING: There still exist the work of other students from other quarters in the same web space as you are going to use. Please be careful not to harm their work in any way.
  6. Hint: Feel free to examine the previous QTR's work for pointers on how and what to do for your site.
  7. This is both a Team and an Individual Exercise, Everyone must produce what is required of the individual portion of these assignments. Your team as a whole is responsible for the group part of these assignments, you'll need to divide up the responsibilities among your members.
  8. As always, I'll make myself available to help any of you in any way I can. You've got my contact information.

QTR Assignments (3)

  1. Project #1: Due 1/19/00 - NOTE: This will probably be the most difficult of the three assignments because you'll have to go through the learning curve of the HTML Editor, the FTP software, the Server access methodologies, subdirectory structures, naming conventions, etc. There's a lot to get used to in a very short period of time. The next two assignments build on this one.

Here's the Assignment: Aside from accomplishing the previously mentioned activities (which I will walk you through in class), each 'Individual' student will be responsible for creating a biographical web page (sort of half bio, half resume) for inclusion in your section of your teams web page. I'll have some requirements or the minimum standards that each of these individual pages must have and present them in class during my lecture. Additionally, the 'Team' will be responsible for the development of the team web site infrastructure what each of these individual web pages is to be housed under. That includes Navigation, Look & Feel, Layout and Design. It also includes any coordination by the team members in assign a webmaster / webmistress to oversee the whole process, collect the individual assignments by the various members and them make sure they are placed in their proper spot on the server and that they are tied together as a cohesive whole web site.

More Notes: Since there are 3 web projects, I'll only be looking for a basic infrastructure (which I'll help you with in class) to exist for the first assignment to be considered complete. I'll expect that you'll improve this during the course of the quarter.

Keys: Everyone does their own individual assignments pieces, that's a requirement. The team member(s) chosen to coordinate the activity of procuring and constructing the team site from the individual pieces must take responsibility for that.

  2. Project #2: Due 2/16/00 - This assignments is a team assignment. The team is required to create a client section on your site to describe your client and your work on their business case. Make sure to incorporate any of their logo's, 'some' background material and some of your preliminary observations and analysis. Additionally, upgrade the existing infrastructure to the standards that it should be at this point in terms of NAV, graphics, layout, links, etc.

Notes: Although this is a team assignment, everyone helps in some way (you are to figure out in which ways). I'll be looking for evidence of this and grading it.

  3. Project #3: Due 3/9/00 - This is also a team effort with the same rules of individual participation that the previous assignment had. Your team is to add a section which you are particularly proud of and that defines your team in some way. It is a completely open assignment. The only parameters are that you are proud of your work at the end and that everyone participates in some way. Consequently, improve your basic infrastructure to the new levels that you may want it to be.
